Upper Perkiomen Watershed Conservation Plan

The Upper Perkiomen Watershed encompasses over 144 square miles, in 25 municipalities in 4 counties.  Like most watersheds of this size a strategic regional approach is necessary to enhance and maintain the quality of the watershed as a whole.

The Upper Perkiomen Watershed Coalition (UPWC) is currently engaged in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) in the preparation of a Rivers Conservation Plan (RCP), which most of the townships and municipalities in the watershed have endorsed.  Natural Lands Trust (NLT) was retained as the consultant for this project.

This grant project from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) will provide a plan designed to take significant steps to enhance the long term health and enjoyment of the resources of this region.  This plan will promote water quality and habitat protection through a non-regulatory framework for communities and organizations to become directly involved.

Where we are now:

The information regarding the watershed has been gathered and reviewed.  A preliminary draft of the final plan was prepared and presented to residents of the Upper Perkiomen Watershed in public meetings in June, 2001 in Washington township, Berks County, Milford Township, Bucks County, and Red Hill Borough, Montgomery County.

In preparing the final draft of the conservation plan, gaps in the data about the watershed were filled in. Recommendations for projects to address problems and opportunities in the watershed, solicited from municipalities, organizations, and individuals in the valley, were incorporated into the plan.

Copies of the final plan will be available for review in the offices of all of the 25 municipalities that make up the Upper Perkiomen Watershed. There will also be a copy in the Upper Perkiomen Valley Library in Red Hill.

The final plan will be presented in a public meeting on Thursday evening, November 29 at 7:00 PM at the Upper Perkiomen Valley Library in Red Hill. All interested citizens are urged to attend.
