OVERVIEW OF AQUA FAIR

Each year in May, on the Saturday before Mother's Day, the Upper Perkiomen Watershed Coalition presents Aqua Fair. Aqua Fair is an environmental fair that celebrates the world of nature, in general, and water in particular. It is a day intended to help all participants develop a greater appreciation of the natural resources that surround us, and a sense of responsibility for protecting them for ourselves, our families, and future generations.

There are two major focuses of Aqua Fair: Exhibits by organizations active in some aspect of environmental education or protection, and contests in local schools on an environmental theme selected by the Aqua Fair planning committee.

Environmental Exhibits

Aqua Fair provides a venue for organizations (non-profits, government, and commercial) to tell their story to a receptive audience. It's also an opportunity for the audience to learn the latest information about the land, the air, or the water that makes up the environment in which we live. Last year 30 organizations exhibited at Aqua Fair. This year we expect even more.

This year we are especially inviting environmental clubs in local schools to exhibit their recent projects as Aqua Fair exhibitors. So, if you're a member of an environmental club in your school, talk to your adviser about having your group exhibit at this year's Aqua Fair.

School Contests

The second major focus of Aqua Fair are contests in local schools. This year's theme is "Water: What do we know? Where does it come from? Where does it go?". Students in the elementary grades participate on a classroom basis, with each student preparing a poster on some aspect of the theme. Students in the middle and high school grades can submit individual contest entries on some aspect of the theme. Categories include Art, Science, Writing, and Photography. The Writing and Photography categories also have separate contests for Adult entries.

There are lots of winners in the elementary school poster contests because there are separate contests for each grade level in each school.

There are First, Second, Third, and Honorable Mention prizes in all contests. First prizes in the elementary poster contests win an ice cream party for their entire class. Winners of the middle and high school contests receive medals and a certificate.

The Upper Perkiomen Watershed includes schools in 5 school districts: Boyertown School District, Pennridge School District, Quakertown Community School District, Southern Lehigh School District, and Upper Perkiomen School District. We have received permission from all of these school districts to have their schools participate in Aqua Fair contests. We have sent invitations to every public, parochial, and private elementary, middle, and high school located in the Upper Perkiomen Watershed.  So, if you'd like to enter one of the Aqua Fair contests, contact your teacher or principal at your school for more information.

And, remember there are Adult contests in the Writing and Photography categories.

But there is much more to Aqua Fair: a day of fun for the whole family. Games, crafts, nature walks, live animals, pony rides, music, food, and more. Check out the Aqua Fair Flyer.

Volunteers

Aqua Fair is entirely a volunteer effort. If you would like to volunteer to help out with Aqua Fair 2007, we would be happy to have you. To volunteer, contact Aqua Fair chairs: George Van Rossum 215-541-4586 or Sandy Wadsworth 610-965-5552.

Aqua Fair 2006 was a great success! A large number of people and organizations made it all possible.

At the Green Lane Nature Center, behind the Marlborough Elementary School on Route 29 in Marlborough Township.
